HISTORY OF RAMESHWARAM

ACCORDING HINDU MYTHALOGY

Rameshwaram means Lord of Rama (Bhagwan Ashutosh Shankar). it's among twelve sacred jyotirlinga (symbol of divine light) -sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  •  Lord Rama wanted to atone sin of killing Ravana -a brahmin (a great scholar) and a real Shiva bhakta.
  •  he sent Lord Hanumanji to Mount Kailash and seek a Shiva lingam for Shiva puja . Nevertheless; like all sacred ceremonies; this puja was fixed on a specific hour.
  •  Hanuman  felt that entire Mount Kailash represented Lord Shiva so it had been an uphill task to seek out the proper Shiva lingam.
  •  Goddess Sita made a Shiva lingam of sand and Lord Lakshmana , Lord Rama and Sita  consecrated it with pious water of seven rivers. Goddess Uma Devi and Lord Mahadev appeared on sky and blessed all.
  •  On the opposite hand, Lord Hanuman  managed to seek out right lingam for puja but found to his dismay that Sita  had already installed a lingam of sand.
  • He was hurt that he couldn't complete wish to his lord and divine mother and tried to exchange Rameshwaram lingam with Vishwanath lingam. But, with all his valor and power; he couldn't move an in. of it.
  •  he realized that Rameshwaram lingam was too divine because it had been consecrated by divine couple and Lakshmana .
  •  Lord Lakshmana  Lord Rama and Goddess Sita declared that each one true devotees to Lord Rameshwaram must worship Vishwanath lingam first to realize blessings of Rameshwaram lingam.
  •  Rameshwaram is among four most sacred shrines (Dhams) of Hinduism - Rameshwaram, Badrinath , Jagannath , Dwarkadheesh. it's believed Lord Hari bathes in Rameshwaram, worships in Badrinath ;eats at Jagannath and rest in Dwarkadheesh .
  •  Many south Indian families visit Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi) after visiting Rameshwaram as a sacred ritual.
  • The significance of Rameswaram Ramanathaswamy Temple is that the sanctum sanctorum of the temple has 2 Lingas – the Ramalingam - made out of the sand by Sita, and therefore the Viswalingam – brought by Hanuman. Since Hanuman had brought the Linga
  •  all the way from Kailash, Lord Rama instructed that one should worship Vishwa lingam first.
