INIATION OF ROCK MEMORI OF VIVEKANANDA

Initiation of the Memorial
In January 1962, on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda's birth centenary, (100 years ) a gaggle of individuals formed the Kanyakumari Committee whose objective was to place up a memorial on the rock and a footbridge resulting in the rock. Almost simultaneously, the Ramakrishna Mission in Madras planned about this memorial.
Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari
However, this news wasn't taken in quality by a large population of the local Catholic fishermen. They put up an enormous Cross on the Rock, visible from the shore.
This led to protests by the Hindu population who said the Rock was an area of worship for Hindus. A judicial probe ordered by the Madras (now Tamil Nadu) government stated in unequivocal terms that the rock was Vivekananda Rock, which the Cross was a trespass. Amid all this acrimony, the Cross was removed secretly within the night. things turned volatile and therefore the Rock was declared a prohibited area with armed guards patrolling it.
The Government realised that the Rock was turning into a neighborhood of dispute with Hindus claiming it to be the Vivekananda Rock and Christians that it had been St. Xavier's Rock. It decreed that although the rock was Vivekananda Rock, there would be no memorial constructed thereon . The then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu , Shri M. Bhaktavatsalam, said that only a tablet declaring that the rock was related to Swami Vivekananda might be put up, and zip else. With government permission, the tablet was installed on the Rock on 17 January 1963.
ABOUT ROCK MEMORIAL

  • This magnificent structure was inbuilt the year 1970, under the guidance of Shri Eknath Ranade and Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee. The cost of building the memorial was up to 1 crore 35 lakhs. The rock on which the memorial is constructed measures about 164 mtrs. x 130 mtrs. at the water level and has a spacious level top at an altitude of 17 mtrs.
  • The memorial has two main portions the Vivekananda Mandapam and therefore the Sripada Mandapam, on two adjacent rocks which are separated by 70 meters from one another . The smaller rock known as 'Sripada Parai', it is believed in ancient times that the Goddess Kanya Kumari meditated on this rock and there is a mark on the rock similar to a human foot which is believed to be 'Sripadam', the feet of Goddess. It is now surrounded by a square shrine, Shripada Mandapam.
  • Vivekananda Mandapam has dimension of 534' x 426', a Meditation Hall ( Dhyana Mandapam) and it also has an auditorium (Sabha Mandapam) . A statue of Swami Vivekananda during a standing posture, has also been installed within the auditorium , with its vision directed towards the 'Sripadam'.
WHY ROCK MEMORIAL IS THERE

  • Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari, on December 24 ,25 and 26 in 1892.
  • He swam across the ocean meditated within the isolated rock, referred to as ‘Sripada Parai’.
  • It was on this rock that the Swami Vivekananda meditated before leaving for Chicago to address the World Religious Conference in 1892.
  • After visiting the Kanyakumari Amman temple, Swami Vivekananda stood on the seashore gazing at two rocks that stood some furlongs away.
  •  He was seized by a sudden desire to visit these rocks. It is said that one of these rocks was the exact place where the Goddess Kanyakumari Amman stood in penance.
  • He swam all the way to the rock. He sat in meditation for three days and nights with nothing but the ocean for company. Being an ardent devotee of Kali, it was only to be expected of him to choose this place.
  • It was here that Swami Vivekananda realized the need to reawaken India from its spiritual ignorance.
  • He meditated about the past, present and future of India. It is believed that he received enlightenment here after meditating for 3 continuous days.
  • The meditation transformed Swami Vivekananda into one of the most charismatic spiritual person. This rock where he meditated is now popularly known as Vivekananda memorial and is a major tourist attraction.
ABOUT TIRUVALLURU STATUE

Standing on a 38 feet high pedestal, the large statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar is another popular attraction of a Kanyakumari tour. This statue was built by the Tamil Nadu Government, in the honor of Saint Thiruvalluvar who is undeniably one of the greatest Tamil poets and philosophers. This statue was opened in 2000
Alluring every visitor with its immaculate sculpting, this stone sculpture has been built on 38 foot long pedestal to symbolize 38 chapters of virtue in the Thirukkural. Saint Thiruvalluvar Statue is around 133 feet long when combined with the height of pedestal. The height of 133 feet is also symbolic of the 133 chapters in Thirukkural. Thirukkural, along with many great creations, was written by Saint Thiruvalluvar. The statue is symbolic of various great verses and teaching of this ancient classic of Sangam Literature.
This statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar represents great historical significance as well as it is symbolic of great teaching of Saint Thiruvalluvar. Architecture of Saint Thiruvalluvar Statue, Kanyakumari
With a total weight of 7000 tons, Thiruvalluvar Statue stands majestically at a height of 133 feet. Work of Indian sculptor Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati, this statue captivates every visitor with its artistic excellence.
The slight bend at the waist of the Thiruvalluvar Statue can be seen as similar to the dancing pose of Nataraja, a form of Lord Shiva. Another speciality of this statue is the detailing of the 19 feet high face of Saint Thiruvalluvar. All the features of the face including ears, forehead, eyes and mouth have been sculpted manually. Each made of individual stones these are supported by stubs of Palmyra tree and ironwood. While creating it, around 18000 ironwood poles were tied to 2 truckloads of ropes so as to reach the top of Thiruvalluvar statue.
The statue is standing on pedestal that is three tiered, called as Athara Peedam. The pedestal is surrounded by mandapam known as Alankara Mandapam. This mandapam is surrounded by 10 statues of elephants. These elephants are symbolic of 10 directions in which King Dasaratha, could charioteer. King Dasaratha was the father of Lord Rama. Inside the mandapam, 140 steps have been constructed so that visitors can climb up to the pedestal, and reach the feet of the statue. On the outside edges of the pedestal, a few couplets from Thirukkural have been inscribed.
Right hand of Thiruvalluvar Statue is pointing to the sky with three fingers. This is symbolic of three stanzas of Thirukkural - Aram, Porul and Inbam.
